DAY 1 : Bari → Igoumenitsa

You arrive in Bari in the middle of the afternoon and your motorbike is already waiting for you, ready to go. We load the bikes together and set off across the Adriatic. You spend your last night in Italy on the deck of a ferry, and wake up in Igoumenitsa, hands on the handlebars, with six days in Greece ahead of you.
We disembark early and get straight down to business. You set off on the off-roader from the very first few kilometres, winding your way between the mountains and the sea, and you realise straight away that this is just a taste of what lies ahead. We have lunch in Arta, a town steeped in art and history and famous for its heritage, then we head to Amfilochia, a charming and picturesque coastal town, passing through fields of olive trees.
DAY 2 : Igoumenitsa → Amfilochia
DAY 3 : Amfilochia → Nafpaktos
We leave Amfilochia and the Ambracian Gulf behind to head due south towards the Gulf of Corinth. It’s a mountainous, technically challenging day with plenty of trails. You tackle one mountain pass after another, passing through hilltop villages and forests, and taking in panoramic views stretching far into the Greek hinterland. At the end of the stage, we head back down towards the coast and reach Nafpaktos, renowned for its Venetian harbour and fortress. The sea marks the end of the day.

We leave Nafpaktos, travelling along the Gulf of Corinth, then head inland towards the Parnassus mountain range. It’s an uphill day: you’ll tackle a succession of mountain passes, forest tracks and high-altitude viewpoints. We’ll stop off at Delphi, a major ancient site nestled against the mountainside, before reaching Arachova. You’ll finish the stage in this stone village perched at over 900 metres, renowned for its character and panoramic views.
We’re heading for the mountains of Evrytania, a region few drivers know about and which tourism has overlooked. The roads thin out, the terrain becomes rougher, and the forests close in around the track. You cross isolated mountain passes, follow mountain streams, and every village you pass through seems frozen in time. At the end of the day, Karpenisi awaits you nestled amongst the peaks – the town nicknamed the ‘Greek Switzerland’. There’s nothing around you but mountains.
The highlight of the trip at high altitude. We’re climbing towards the highest mountain passes of the journey. The landscape becomes barren, the peaks of Evrytania roll past, and at times you’ll find yourself cycling for kilometres on end as if you were the only person in the world. Then, after a long descent, a vast expanse of turquoise water appears below: Lake Plastiras. This man-made lake, nestled on a plateau, seems almost unreal, surrounded by mountain peaks and forests. You cycle along its shores until you reach your destination for the day, and the calm of the water brings the day to a close.
We head north through the final hills of Thessaly, along smooth roads winding through forests and across plateaus. And then they appear: the Meteora. These gigantic rock pinnacles rise up from the plain, crowned by monasteries suspended in mid-air. We reach Kalambaka, nestled at their feet. You switch off the engine as you take in one of Europe’s most spectacular landscapes.
The final major stage, and by no means the easiest. We head due west towards Epirus, right into the heart of the Pindus Mountains. The mountain passes come one after another, the gorges grow deeper, and you’re riding along some of the most beautiful tracks of the whole trip. Then the Ionian Sea reappears in the distance: we head back down towards Igoumenitsa, where the loop comes full circle. You switch off the engine at the harbour, with ten days in Greece under your belt.
After one last night on board, we disembark at Bari in the early hours of the morning. But the journey isn’t quite over yet. Before we go our separate ways, we head off to a local vineyard in the heart of Puglia. You swap your helmet for a glass of wine, and we bring these ten days to a close around a table, amongst the vines and under the Italian sun. We’re already thinking back to that first track, to what brought us together. The adventure ends where it began, but you’re not quite the same person when you set off again.
